SCALE UP

All the knowledge generated during DIAGONAL’s runtime will be the basis to create specific risk management guidelines and Safe-by-Design* tools, integrating Life Cycle Sustainability to make the material not just safer but greener and economically feasible.

In order to implement the planned work, the project will be supported by seven industrial demonstrators acting as nanomaterials and/or nano-enabled products manufacturers, to provide:

DIAGONAL will provide a holistic approach by addressing in its industrial demonstrators the following sectors:

*Safe-by-Design principles actively eliminate or reduce risk during design development and ensures that remaining risks are effectively communicated.

Nanocatalytic powders as coating in automotive industry (Monolithos)

Monolithos applies metallic oxide nanoparticles over ceramic substrates used in automotive catalytic converters. Its process is focused in circular economy options, using recycled materials and achieving better performance and reduced material utilisation thanks to the substitution of traditional coating films by nanoparticles.

Graphene reinforced metallic coatings (CNANO)

CNANO produces nanocomposite coating composed by a nickel phosphorus metal matrix and commercially available graphene nanoplatelets with applications in industry sectors as automotive as well as oil and gas thanks to its anticorrosion properties. Currently, the company is looking to safe innovations to optimise the final properties of the nanocomposites.

Graphene-based NMs applied in fabrics and metal coatings (Graphene-XT)

Graphene-XT patented technology produces graphene with a liquid phase exfoliation process that allows producing high-quality graphene consisting of 50% of monolayers and 50% of few layers. Graphene-XT is specialised in applying the graphene mixtures into several nano-enabled products: ESD bags, lubricant coatings, printed electronics, lubricant oils, composites, bio-functional sensors and improved membranes.

Single Wall Carbon Nanotubes (HARNs) embedded in epoxy additive (OCSiAl)

Single-walled carbon nanotubes are used as ingredient in an epoxy floor coating additive containing oxirane, mono methylderivs for industrial floor coatings. Therefore, initial physicochemical and toxicological parameters will be already available, and OCSiAl will provide samples for further necessary studies.

Metallic HARNs for printed electronics (DTI)

DTI is developing silver nanowires to be used in conductive tracks for printed electronics. In this industrial case, a balance between the nanomaterials use-oriented properties (e.g., electronic, magnetic, mechanical, optical, thermal, etc.) and their identity as defined by their unique intrinsic physicochemical characteristics (e.g., composition, size, shape, crystallinity, surface reactivity) will be sought.

Metallic NPs for applications in cosmetics and biomedical industries (4n)

4n will be involved in the project developing and manufacturing zinc oxide applied into two different types of nano-enabled products: sunscreens and bioimaging probes. 4n is equipped with spectroscopy analytical and characterisation tools, allowing for the estimate of the size and distribution of the MCNMs manufactured in any scale.
